You may remember when we talked about the Life To Do List: the list of things that starts with "I've always wanted to..." We love to hear and share stories of women who take the bold step to accomplish things their lists.
As if launching her own business, Moms Love It, was not enough, Jocelyn Chia took her life up another level by pursuing her curiosity for stand-up comedy:
Doing stand-up comedy is something that has been at the back of my mind for sometime - that and sit-com acting. I seem to have this knack for making people laugh (often times very unwittingly!), so being a stand-up comedian was something I've thought about every now and then but never actually got around to doing. The catalyst to finally doing something about this desire was during a She Creates Change "Calling party" - where a group of the women (who have gotten to know each other quite well through the program) brainstorm with one another on our possible callings in life. I was hell-bent that being an entrepreneur was my calling, when one of the amazing women in the program spoke up, saying "Jocelyn, you are so so so funny. EVERY time you speak, I look to see if people laugh at what you say, and EVERY single time, they do. I would LOVE to see you do stand-up comedy."
[Her] words were what sparked the latent desire I had been harboring - and within a couple of days of the party, I saw on nycdailydeals.com that the Manhattan Comedy School was offering a free stand-up comedy workshop. I thought "It must be meant to be." So I went for the workshop, really liked it, and signed up for a full 6-week course. At the end of the course, I was invited to do a set at Gotham Comedy Club's New Talent Show. Of course I said yes! I often find that when I have a true, heart-felt desire, the way is shown to me - I just have to be willing to play my part.
Well I was a bit nervous for about the first 5 seconds, but as I warmed up and got into the set, and heard the laughter and applause of the crowd, I really got into it and just started having fun. It was a great experience overall - it's very gratifying to be able to make people laugh. I just got invited to do another New Talent Show on April 29 at the Metropolitan Room, where Jerry Seinfeld himself performed!
With the internet, there are so many resources at our fingertips. There's really no reason why anyone couldn't take the first step to at least researching what they have to do to accomplish something on their Life To Do List. I think not knowing how to go about doing something is probably a big impediment. So go out there and do the necessary research (whether through the internet, books, magazines or talking to people) to at least know what the beginning steps are to take. But knowing of course isn't enough! You then have to bite the bullet and actually DO what you need to do, to accomplish what you desire.
